Sushi Sogo Japanese Restaurant
One of my favorite hole in the wall sushi places is Sushi Sogo. It’s a landmark restaurant to the locals of Cooper City, FL. It’s the kind of place you might miss if you blinked at the intersection of Sterling road and Palm Avenue (aka: SW 100th Ave). It’s nestled in a corner facing the Westar Gas station. (Please no pub about eat and get gas!)
Walking in you are greeted quickly by a pleasant hostess and escorted your clean table. Everything is in understated red, black, and wood tones decor of Japan. And yes there are many Maneki-neko Cats about the sushi bar too. These are the cute Japanese Waving Lucky cat; It’s a lucky charm often believed to bring good luck to the owner
This is truly a neighborhood sushi joint.
If you go often enough, like me, you will see familial faces and local friends. It’s 6:45PM on a Wednesday night. I’m dining alone, but I don’t feel alone seated at the bar with most every table filled.
Lily hands the menu to me. “what would you like to drink” she asked. “A large hot sake would be excellent,” I said.
DAMM! I missed it! Only 15 minutes late for their excellent “Early Bird Specials!” It ended at 6:30pm. I love their $12.50 – #12. Rock & Roll: choice of 2 rolls: cucumber, tuna, California, J.B., salmon skin, or eel. Served With Soup, and Salad”
Lily returns with my sake and a small bowl of cold udon noodles with sesame seeds. She says “their on the house.” As they usually are every time I come here. And their really good too!
I’m not super hungry so I’m careful not to over order as I usually do. Sushi Sogo has the standard list of sushi fair, both hot and cold.
I took a big drink of hop sake and asked Lily to bring me: Misu soup, House salad with ginger dressing, and a Sunshine roll (salmon, tuna & scallions) with spicy mayo on the side, al la carte of course. She took my order with a smile.
Soup and salad quickly appeared. They’re medium portions sized right. I really appreciate that the use enough ginger dressing so you can really taste it. The veggies look fresh and crisp, and the soup has a good balance of saltiness with floating seaweed and tofu. My Sunshine roll arrived just in time. I had finished the soup, salad, and half of my large sake.
The roles are Sushi Sogo are fat; no skinny wimpy rolls here! There a few rolls take two bites to eat here! I dare you to eat their 29. Tropical Roll (krab, avocado, cucumber, cantaloupe inside topped with tuna, salmon, white fish & kiwi with tropical sauce) in one bite!
Your meal ends with a small bowl of cantaloupe and kiwi fruit… and check. My complete meal came to $22.00. The Early Bird Special would have only saved me $3.25. But, I don’t care. I haved fine experience tonight and go home happy and full.
